Wyclef Jean Performs Free Western Union Concert in Times Square

November 10, 2009

It’s just before noon on Monday, and hundreds of people are lined up in front of Nokia Theatre in Times Square to see Wyclef Jean team up with Western Union for a free “lunchbreak” concert.

“If you can make it here in the daytime,” Wyclef tells the crowd, “then it’s not about the music. It’s about the movement.”

The movement Jean is referring to are environmental and social initiatives he seeks to reinforce as both a musician and Goodwill Ambassador to Haiti.

In addition to these posts, Jean has plenty to celebrate. First, his very own Western Union Visa prepaid debit card debuted today (complete with image of him on the front), and his new mixtape From The Hut To The Projects To The Mansion, drops tomorrow. The record features everyone from DJ Drama to Eve to Cyndi Lauper to Timbaland.

Wyclef called Drama onstage during today’s show, along with rapper Maino, for an energetic performance of “All the Above,” while Western Union President Stewart Stockdale had his moment of glory during an impromptu dance of “You Don’t Wanna Go Outside.”

Clef also mixed Lil Wayne‘s “A Milli” with his Fugees classic “Fu Gee La,” and dove into the audience during “You Don’t Wanna Go Outside” with this warning to security: “Calm down man… I’m not 50 Cent. I know how to punch people out myself.”

Check out videos of all, below.

VH1 Relaunches Behind the Music

Lil Wayne and Scott Weiland will be featured in upcoming episodes, along with other artists the network is interested in profiling.
Says VH1 executive VP of original programming Jeff Olde:
“We always hear about the show, even now. It’s amazing how much affection viewers have for it.”

Smart People Dig U2, not Lil Wayne

March 13, 2009

According to a new study, U2 fans are among the most intelligent of all music lovers.

Beethoven listeners were rated the smartest, while fans of Radiohead and Bob Dylan also fared well.
Beatles, Hendrix, Sinatra and Queen fans were found to be averagely intelligent.
The study was completed by comparing a person’s favorite artists with their standardized test scores.
Most stupid on the list??
Lil Wayne fans.
Hah!

M.I.A. Does Not Give Birth at Grammys

February 9, 2009

Woulda been awesome, but M.I.A.‘s water did not break onstage during her Grammys performance tonight.

Instead, she, Kanye West, T.I., Jay-Z and Lil Wayne performed a slightly chaotic rendition of “Swagger Like Us.”
We were secretly hoping that the stress of sharing the stage with rap’s elitists would have induced her pregnancy!!!
Oh well.

Lil Wayne Goes Rock?

January 26, 2009

Lil Wayne was arguably the biggest rapper of 2008.

So what in tarnation is he thinking switching to rock in ’09????

If the shoe fits, Weezy!!!
According to his publicist, Weezy’s next record, Rebirth, due April 7, will be a completely rock album. Drake, a rapper on Weezy’s label, confirmed that notion, citing that Weezy wanted to do something different to “throw individuals off.” Kinda like Kanye.
While I sort of applaud the guy for changing up his formula, I have to wonder, does he even have singing chops??
If not, does he plan to rap-rock his way through it?? Kevin Rudolf style??
I’m so cold. And scared.
