Wyclef Pleads for Help after Earthquake Shakes Haiti

January 13, 2010

Wyclef Jean is pleading for help after a 7.0 earthquake plagued his home country of Haiti Tuesday.

“Haiti today faced a natural disaster of unprecedented proportion, an earthquake unlike anything the country has ever experienced,” Jean wrote on his website, of the largest earthquake the Caribbean island has seen in over 200 years.

“I cannot stress enough what a human disaster this is, and idle hands will only make this tragedy worse,” Wyclef continued.

“The over 2 million people in Port-au-Prince tonight face catastrophe alone. We must act now. President Obama has already said that the U.S. stands ‘ready to assist’ the Haitian people. The U.S. military is the only group trained and prepared to offer that assistance immediately. They must do so as soon as possible. The international community must also rise to the occasion and help the Haitian people in every way possible.”

While no numbers have officially been reported, officials predict the Haiti earthquake death toll to be in the thousands.

Wyclef Jean Performs Free Western Union Concert in Times Square

November 10, 2009

It’s just before noon on Monday, and hundreds of people are lined up in front of Nokia Theatre in Times Square to see Wyclef Jean team up with Western Union for a free “lunchbreak” concert.

“If you can make it here in the daytime,” Wyclef tells the crowd, “then it’s not about the music. It’s about the movement.”

The movement Jean is referring to are environmental and social initiatives he seeks to reinforce as both a musician and Goodwill Ambassador to Haiti.

In addition to these posts, Jean has plenty to celebrate. First, his very own Western Union Visa prepaid debit card debuted today (complete with image of him on the front), and his new mixtape From The Hut To The Projects To The Mansion, drops tomorrow. The record features everyone from DJ Drama to Eve to Cyndi Lauper to Timbaland.

Wyclef called Drama onstage during today’s show, along with rapper Maino, for an energetic performance of “All the Above,” while Western Union President Stewart Stockdale had his moment of glory during an impromptu dance of “You Don’t Wanna Go Outside.”

Clef also mixed Lil Wayne‘s “A Milli” with his Fugees classic “Fu Gee La,” and dove into the audience during “You Don’t Wanna Go Outside” with this warning to security: “Calm down man… I’m not 50 Cent. I know how to punch people out myself.”

Wyclef, Eve Team Up for Advertising Week

September 22, 2009

“I was still on welfare when this record came out,” Wyclef Jean told the crowd at Nokia Theatre Monday night. “And still working at Burger King!”

The former Fugees frontman then dove into an alcohol-fueled version of “Ready or Not,” also informing the crowd that, “I hope you got the drink in your system, cause I do.”

Jean teamed up with Eve and doo-wop artist Raphael Saadiq for New York’s Advertising Week – an annual industry event designed to promote networking and reward creativity in media. (Monday’s event was sponsored by Billboard.com).

Wyclef played nearly two hours for employees, including songs like “Perfect Gentleman,” “Gone Til November,” a cover of Bob Marley‘s “No Woman No Cry,” and an in-Poison Ivy’s-face version of “Sweetest Girl.” (Our favorite!)
